Lip Plumping

Bride / Kevin Liang

With the rise of bridal "tweakments"—also know as small cosmetic procedures—many brides may consider getting lip filler leading up to their wedding. But as with any beauty service, opting for fillers is not a decision to make at the last minute. Fillers can also be pricey—they can cost anywhere from $500-$1,000 for treatment, so it's an investment you'll want to be prepared for.

According to dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Sheila Farhang, if you decide to go with fillers, it's best to get them done two to three months before the big day. This provides enough time for any bruising and swelling to go away, plus you can make touch-ups and learn how to apply makeup to your new lips. Unless you get them dissolved, lip filler lasts about a year, so it can extend far beyond your wedding.

If you rather not invest the time and money for fillers, there are other ways you can make your lips look fuller using just makeup. We spoke to professional makeup artist Sara Talias about what products and techniques she uses on her bridal clients to achieve a naturally full lip.

“On the day of the wedding I hydrate the bride's lips very well with a balm like the Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask," says Talias. "Then I exfoliate dead skin and finish with another layer of lip balm—this creates a natural fullness and helps lipstick to sit better all day.”

Lip Liner: Charlotte Tilbury's Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Iconic Nude

Talias recommends using lipliner to create the illusion of a fuller lip. "I start with a neutral lip liner, like Charlotte Tilbury's Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Iconic Nude, and slightly over-line the lips," she says. Talias also applies a liner that coordinates with the bride's lipstick so it blends well together.

Lipstick: Tom Ford's Lipstick in Indian Rose

“It is so important that a bride looks and feels like herself on her wedding” says Talias. “If she has a signature lip color, I always recommend that she goes with that for her big day.” For those looking for a new color, she recommends going a few shades deeper than your natural lip color. “One of my most used lipstick colors for brides is Tom Ford's Lipstick in Indian Rose,” she says. “It is just the perfect pink and compliments a wide array of skin tones.”

Lip Gloss: Fenty Gloss Bomb in SweetMouth

For brides who like a little bit of shine, a gloss may be the way to go. It can also give the illusion of plumper lips: “Adding a lighter lip gloss, such as Fenty Gloss Bomb in SweetMouth, in the center of the lips, helps to create a fuller look,” says Talias.

Plumping Gloss: Buxom Full On Plumping Lip Cream Gloss

To turn up the volume even more, a plumping gloss is one of the best products for fuller lips. However, Talias cautions that you always try these types of products out well before the wedding to make sure you can tolerate the feeling. “They can be effective, but most of the plumping effects come from ingredients that cause a slight irritation to the lips," says Talias. We like this one from Buxom because it nourishes the lips with hyaluronic acid, as well as vitamins A and E, and it only imparts a slight tingling sensation when applied.
