Jonathan Scott Made This Common Mistake When Picking Out Zooey Deschanel’s Engagement Ring

Jonathan Scott might have popped the question to Zooey Deschanel in August 2023, but the Property Brothers star picked out her engagement ring, a silver band with colorful flower-shaped stones, a year before that. Despite being extremely prepared for the life-changing moment, Scott told People in a cover story interview, which was published on October 4, 2023, that he made a common mistake when ordering the ring—he got the wrong size. “I measured so badly,” he admitted. The New Girl alum clarified that her ring size is a 4.75 “in case anybody wants to buy me a ring,” to which Scott quipped, “Better not. She’s off the market.”

Even though the sparkler wasn’t the perfect fit, Scott put a lot of thought into the chosen accessory. In the interview, the reality TV star revealed that he paid close attention to Deschanel’s taste in jewelry. So, when the actress mentioned that she liked the floral rock a year before he proposed, he jumped at the opportunity to purchase it. “I immediately screen-grabbed that and held onto it for a long time,” Scott shared. “That was the one she got.” Then, two and a half months before the proposal, he asked for her parents’ permission. “They were like, ‘We already consider you family,’ which I feel the same way,” Scott recounted.

When the time came to pop the question, Scott arranged for the event to happen at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, which is one of the HGTV star’s favorite spots in his hometown, per the publication. Scott told the outlet that he made sure their group was the last one at the landmark. Deschanel said she didn’t suspect anything until the bagpipe band that was previously playing stopped performing, so a guitarist could take center stage. “I was like, ‘I think something’s happening,’” Deschanel recalled. The new instrumentalist started playing “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young. “That’s a special song for us,” Deschanel said. “[But] I didn’t want to decide what was happening until I knew.”

At that moment, Deschanel’s kids, Elsie and Charlie, pulled out a banner that said, “Zooey, will you marry me?” The answer, of course, was yes. Even though Deschanel’s children played a big role in executing the proposal, they were just as surprised as Deschanel was. Scott opted not to fill the little ones in on the plan, which ended up being a smart move. “They would’ve told me immediately,” Deschanel explained. 

Although Elsie and Charlie were oblivious, their candid reaction added to the impact of the moment. “When Elsie turned around and read the sign, she immediately goes, ‘Did you just get married?’” Scott remembered. “And we’re like, ‘Well no, not yet, but we got engaged!’ And she’s like, ‘Does that mean I get to be a flower girl?’ And we’re like, Yes, yes you can.’ So, it was really sweet to have them there, too.”
