Kerry Washington and NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha were married in June of 2013, and that means they’re gearing up to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary later this year. At the March 2, 2023, premiere for her new show, Unprisoned, the actress chatted with Entertainment Tonight about her upcoming plans for the milestone occasion. When asked about the date, Washington responded with, “How do you even remember that?” She was then coy about the details of the impending celebration. “Do you remember how secret my wedding was? How private and secretive it was? That's how the anniversary is gonna be too!”

Washington also told the outlet that since she plays a therapist in the new series, her friends always ask her for tips to improve their partnership. “It’s funny because people used to come to me to fix things with my white hat,” she said, referring to her role as Olivia Pope in Scandal. “Now, people come to me for relationship advice. People, I’m just acting! I don’t know any of this stuff. None of it!”

Although Washington joked about her lack of knowledge in the relationship department, she does know a thing or two about her own marriage. In a Marie Claire cover story, the Little Fires Everywhere star opened up about how Asomugha is her biggest support system. “I’m in my immediate truth with him,” she reveals. “Those mirrors are important because they help me get back to myself.” The star also talked about her approach to parenting their two children, Isabelle and Caleb. “Part of their journey is to know not everybody's going to hold your hand all the time," Washington notes. "I try to show up as the person they need to help them be the best versions of themselves.”

For the actress, becoming a better partner and parent requires learning to challenge expectations and listening to herself instead. “Part of trusting myself is figuring out how to define what my personal success looks like for me, so that I'm not just choosing everybody else's idea of what it has to look like," she explains. "It's that trust of, if it's mine, it's meant to be, but I've got to stay ready to pivot and evolve and grow."

Although Washington and Asomugha have been married for nearly a decade, they keep their relationship under wraps. “They’re homebodies,” a source told People. “Every now and then, they’ll go out to a movie at ArcLight, but they just hang out at their place.” The actress also explained that she rarely posts about her marriage on social media. “That means not only did I not tell you when I was getting married, it also means if somebody has rumors about what's going on in my marriage, I don't refute them because I don't talk about my personal life,” she noted. This rule also applies to sharing photos of her children online. “I think any parent would want to keep kids from a situation that causes them to feel scared," she said. “I don’t want them to be exploited, particularly in this social media world."
