Sure, a diamond is forever, but that is of no use to you if your ring gets lost or stolen. As much as you want to show off your beautiful engagement ring and/or wedding band, you may also be hesitant to wear it everywhere. That’s exactly where silicone wedding rings come in. This genius invention takes the place of pricey rings to give you peace of mind, no matter what you’re doing. It's an excellent option to avoid theft or damage in certain situations, such as going on a beach vacation or attending a workout class.

What Is Silicone?

Silicone is a type of rubber that is flexible yet very durable. Silicone rings can be designed in a wide range of colors and textures.

“Silicone wedding bands provide a safe, comfortable, and affordable alternative to typical engagement and wedding ring bands,” explains jeweler Carol Offman.

Read on to find out the benefits of a silicone wedding ring, things to consider when shopping for one, and the best silicone ring options available.

The Pros and Cons of Silicone Rings

Silicone wedding bands are a fraction of the price of a diamond ring (they’re usually under $50) and are easy to find. Not only do they help prevent theft, but they also help keep your rings in better condition. When you’re wearing a silicone ring, you’re not wearing your “real” ring as often, meaning you’re preventing scratching and general wear and tear. They also fit comfortably and come in a wide variety of colors and sizes.

Of course, silicone isn’t as resilient as metal. “Silicone will not last a lifetime when worn every day because silicone breaks down over time,” Offman says. “A ring made of gold or platinum will last forever if made well.” Still, it’s nice to have the option of wearing something much less expensive when the situation calls for it.

What to Look For in a Silicone Ring

Why would I get a silicone ring instead of a standard metal ring? Many people choose to purchase a silicone wedding ring to wear when they’re traveling, going to the gym, or doing something outdoors like hiking or spending a day at the beach. Some people even feel more comfortable wearing them to work, especially if they work in an industry like construction.

What color options are available for silicone rings? You can have fun picking one out that matches your personality, you can opt for a shade that mimics platinum, yellow gold, or silver, or you can choose something brighter and more fun.

Can I still get a traditional metal ring? Of course! You can wear your silicone ring when you’re out hiking or playing sports and then wear your metal ring the rest of the time.

How to Care for Silicone Rings

Silicone rings are really easy to take care of. Offman recommends cleaning them with a simple soap and water combo but says not to put them back on until they’re completely dry.

“They should not be worn in the shower,” she adds. “If worn wet, bacteria can grow where there is no airflow between the ring and the skin.”
