In addition to following a comprehensive skin care regimen in the days and months leading up to your wedding, you've also probably scheduled a few key beauty appointments, including everything from facials and manicures to haircuts and dental cleanings. While most engaged men and women spend a great deal of time working on their natural glow, you don't want to forget about other key aesthetic details—your eyebrows, in particular, have the ability to make or break your big-day look. Although your makeup artist will definitely accentuate your facial features with expert-approved products the day you tie the knot, getting your eyebrows done before you walk down the aisle will take your beauty look to the next level. “Your eyebrows create the frame and balance of your face,” eyebrow expert Kelly Zhang explains. “Having the right style and shape of your brow can make a huge difference to your look.”

Meet the Expert

Just like any other beauty treatment, there is a certain timeline you need to follow to get optimal results. For instance, if you wax your eyebrows too early, your hair might grow back thicker and fuller by the time you wed your partner. if you wait until the last minute, the skin around your brows might look red, irritated, and inflamed on your special day. To avoid these wedding beauty disasters, we asked the experts to reveal the best time to see a professional. Whether you opt to thread or laminate your brows, the type of service you select affects when you need to book your consultation.

When to Get Your Eyebrows Done Before Your Wedding

The type of treatment you book will influence when you get your eyebrows done. From microblading to tinting, this is the perfect timeline to follow for each type of brow service.

Microblading

Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that uses a blade-shaped tool to create hair strokes across your brows while adding pigmentation to your skin, according to Zhang. This treatment will transform sparse brows into thicker, fuller ones that look completely natural, and your makeup artist won’t need to fill them in with a pencil on the morning of your wedding day. Since microblading lasts for over a year and doesn’t require any touch-ups, Zhang suggests seeing a professional six months before you tie the knot. Once your brows have healed from the initial consultation, she recommends scheduling a second appointment two months out to fine-tune the color and shape.

Lamination

Brow lamination, also known as an eyebrow perm, uses chemicals to semi-permanently set your hairs in a vertical direction, which straightens the strands and makes them appear as if they’re brushed upward. This treatment creates a full, lifted, uniform look with a slicked, shiny finish. If your eyebrow hairs tend to grow in different directions or if you have gaps, this type of service is best for you. For the most notable results, head to your first appointment three months before your big day and then follow up with another appointment one to two weeks out.

Threading

For perfectly groomed eyebrows with a sharp arch, you might consider threading. With this type of treatment, your technician will use cotton thread to remove stray hairs above and below your brow shape. Threading is a popular choice that’s perfect for brides with sensitive skin, thicker brows, or for anyone who wants to obliterate even those barely-visible hairs. Since your follicles start to grow back about two to five weeks afterward, it’s best to receive this service at a maximum of two weeks in advance.

Waxing

Using either hot or cold wax, waxing your eyebrows successfully removes unwanted hairs above and below your brows. Getting your eyebrows waxed is quick and effective, and it’s the preferred treatment for those with bushy brows. Since this treatment zaps dead skin cells, it leaves a smooth finish that makes applying makeup products much easier. With redness and irritation as a potential side effect, eyebrow guru Giselle Soto advises coming in three to seven days ahead of your big day.

Tinting

The color of your brows also makes a difference in your overall look. With eyebrow tinting, a stylist uses semi-permanent dye to darken the finer and lighter hairs, which leads to fuller, more defined brows. If your eyebrows have faded or have become sparse, this treatment will create the illusion that they’re filled in, according to Soto. First, schedule a consultation at least two months out. Then, repeat the treatment about three days before your vow exchange, Soto recommends.

The Best Tips for Pre-Wedding Eyebrow Treatments

It's important to properly prep your eyebrows (and the skin around them) before having a treatment done, which is why we asked the experts to share a few must-know tips to properly prepare for your appointment. Zhang explains that your technician will be producing a new brow shape, so you should avoid plucking or waxing your own brows before you seek professional help. Likewise, Soto suggests avoiding retinols, chemical peels, or any other harsh products that could irritate your skin for at least two weeks before your session. Zhang also encourages you to refrain from trying a completely new eyebrow shape or treatment too close to the wedding day in case you aren’t satisfied with the outcome.
